NCL Escape - Day 1 (Embarkation & Sail Away)

NCL Escape - Day 1
(Embarkation & Sail Away)

Off to the ship we go in the free shuttle from Miccosukee Resort & Casino.  With only a 30 minute ride away, we were dropped off right in front of the port entrance.  That was a bonus as there were many people at the entrance trying to get onboard and of course many people getting off the ship from the previous cruise.  We arrived at 11AM and headed through security to check in.

With only a ½ hour wait, we were the first group to get onboard. As soon as we are onboard, guess who we run into? Klaus!! Klaus Lugmaier, Norwegian Cruise Line's top hotel director, is an expert when it comes to launching new ships for the line. He is the head of every ship on NCL and their functionality.  He was in the middle of doing some training but it was a real treat to see him.

Then we we went to the internet café.  Couple of bargains here but glad we waiting to purchase it onboard.  You have the opportunity, which is not offered on NCL’s “My NCL” log in page, to get the Unlimited Internet Package for $209! Well worth it for a 7 day cruise and did I say “unlimited?”  You can be on the internet, forget to log off, etc and not get charged!

Next stop, visiting the different public areas.  Even though most are not opened yet, you have the opportunity to explore the ship, visit different public areas and make reservations for dinner.  Perfect opportunity if you didn’t already pre arrange them.  After the visit to the public areas, we went to Jimmy Buffett's Margaretville to try a famous Margarita! Margaritaville is a song that Jimmy Buffet wrote back in 1977.  This song was written about a drink Buffett discovered at Lung's Cocina del Sur restaurant on Anderson Lane in Austin, Texas, and the first huge surge of tourists who descended on Key West, Florida around that time. In the United States "Margaritaville" reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and
went to number one on the Easy Listening chart, also peaking at #13 on theHot Country Songs chart. Billboard ranked it number 14 on its 1977 Pop Singles year-end chart. It remains Buffett's highest charting solo single. Named for the cocktail margarita, with lyrics reflecting a laid-back lifestyle in a tropical climate, "Margaritaville" has come to define Buffett's music and career and Inspired by the lyrics and philosophy of Jimmy Buffett, Margaritaville transports guests to the island destination of their memories or their dreams and invites guests to raise a glass and take a bite out of paradise. Even though it was a little pricy, it’s a nice experience to just get one drink.  Then it was off to the Garden Café to have some lunch.  I love the Garden Café as the food is fresh, drinks are abound and the mango iced tea is refreshing.

Next to the assigned Munster station for the drill.  This is mandatory and everyone who is a passenger, including crew, must attend.

After that, we headed to the cabin and had some nice surprises awaiting us.  Bon Voyage celebration decorations in our room with a cake!  Ok, diet is out the window at this point but well worth it!

As the day went on, you get the “Freestyle Daily Schedule” to check out all the activities that are onboard and plan your schedule ahead of time.  Don’t worry though.  I will post the schedules they had per day so that you can read them over should you be on this cruise at some point.

Since there was so much to do and see the first day that if you have never been on a cruise, it can be a little overwhelming.  Since this was my 72 cruise and JC’s very 1st one, it was a great opportunity to show him all that the cruise ship and cruising has to offer.  Plus, he has a personal tour guide!

The majority of our day after was going to poolside for the sail away party, hitting the casino, eating dinner at O’Sheehans and just having fun!

You meet so many great people and get to interact with the staff and find out some great information and learn something new every time, even for the seasoned cruiser.

The Welcome Aboard Variety Show at night is a must on your first day onboard.  That is a great show to see. The show not only features all the ships crew but you get a taste of every show onboard, for example the Brat Pack, After Midnight, and special guest Brenda Braxton!  A really great event, so don’t miss out on that!  Then, before you go to bed, make sure you check the Freestyle Daily Schedule to plan what you will do the next day.

It’s boring on a cruise??? I think not….

Please feel free to comment as I would love to hear from you.  Tune in for day two of our cruise on Norwegian's newest ship the Escape!

How A Travel Agent Works

HOW A TRAVEL AGENT WORKS
Written by: Sally Black

When people find out what I do for a living, weird things often happen...
Some will tilt their heads to one side and ask "Do Travel Agents still exist?" as if they were magically staring into the eyes of a unicorn. Others will immediately start over-sharing every travel nightmare they, and everyone on the internet have ever experienced. Finally there are the folks that hit you up with a rapid fire, laundry list of questions like a hypochondriac during a doctor's visit. The other ever popular response is "Wow, so you must get to like travel all over the world for free-right?"
Truth be told, I have the best, most misunderstood job in the world. It's true, most people have no idea how travel agents work and how they can help. Hopefully, I can help clear up some of this confusion by explaining things about what we do....
Most desperate vacation-seekers, take the knee jerk reaction of heading online to make their reservations. The lure of internet convenience and control quickly turns into confusion, indecisiveness and anxiety not to mention a huge time suck. How do I know?...because not a day goes by that I don't receive emails pleading for help from these exact problems from would-be vacationers.
Think of a travel agent as your tour guide that will lead you to the perfect vacation.
If you've ever wondered what a day in the life of a travel agent is like, here's a bit more about what we're all about and how we help our clients....

Travel Agents are "All Inclusive" - Hotels, vacation package companies and cruise lines all include travel agent commissions in their published prices. If you do all the work yourself online, they "pocket" the difference. Using the services of a travel agent means you get the customer service you deserve. You won't be spending hours on the internet, hanging on phone hold for eternity or wasting any precious time wondering and worrying.

Travel Agent Do Not Cost More - Travel agents basically earn their living by the commissions we earn from our sales of hotel stays, cruises, sightseeing and rental cars. The airlines haven't paid commissions to travel agents since the mid 1990's. This is why when my travel agency Vacationkids recommends infants should have their own airlines seats instead of flying free as a lapchild, we're not trying to part you from your money, we're trying to make sure your baby stays safe. If you want to use mileage points too book your own flights, no problem. Online Travel companies do charge service fees. They build them into the cost that you pay. There are some travel agents that do charge a minimal service fee for their time which is usually offset by their time and money savings. Make sure you do ask in your initial consultation. Others may ask for an upfront deposit, especially in situations dealing with very complex itineraries or group events.
Travel Agents Are not pushy - Any good travel agent knows it's not about making the sale, it's about creating happy clients. Happy clients become fans of your company, come back to you every year and recommend your company to others. Most travel agents rejoice when we can save our clients money with a great deal. We make our recommendations based on the specific needs and requests of our clients. We don't base our recommendations on industry sales incentives or bonus gifts. If we know of a better room or experience that will enhance our client's family vacation, we'll suggest. We just want our clients to make the best informed decisions to get the most value for their vacation dollars.
Travel Agents Match Online Prices - Some people just enjoy planning their own vacations. These are probably the same folks who like putting together IKEA furniture. No matter, make yourself happy find your best price and email us all the details. Your travel agent will either be able to match it or tell you why you're setting yourself up for a scam. I even had clients who will make their own reservations directly with a cruise line or tour company then call and transfer their booking to our agency. It's a win-win. They get and do exactly what they want while having us do all the follow up, follow thru while making suggestions to enhance their enjoyment. .
Travel Agents Have Rates That You Don't - Travel agents are privy to special flight prices, special hotel and cruise cabin rates that consumers will never find online themselves. This feature alone will save you money. Beyond pricing, good travel agents have the buying power to get extra amenities like ship board credits or insider tours that can also enhance your family's vacation.
Travel Agents Save You Time - Time in our most precious commodity and yet so many people are willing to waste it. HOURS can be spent properly researching a vacation. With the amount of conflicting information available online, it's easy to quickly get overwhelmed and confused. Many times, the questions perplexing travelers are one that agents can answer right off the top of our heads thanks to our years of experience. If you have detailed questions or need to plan a complicated itinerary, we do all the work for you. We can make the international phone calls to get your questions answered. We know who and how to reach out to in order to get the job done, saving you hours of frustration.
Travel Agents Understand The Fine Print- Most people don't bother reading any of the fine print terms and conditions of their travel documents until it's too late. This is what "trips" them up (pun intended) and costs them big bucks in the long term. Even if folks do stop to read it, they fully understand all the implications. Travel Agents are well versed in these rules, terms and conditions. We can help navigate and protect your family and investment.
Travel Agents Protect You - Most DIY vacation planners don't realize that medical insurance usually does not cover your family while on vacation out of area or especially overseas. Many foreign countries will take your passport if you are admitted to a hospital and will expect payment in full for any treatment or surgery prior to discharge. A good travel agent will make sure you have the proper peace of mind with the right travel insurance to keep your family safe and protected.
Travel Agents Have Contacts - Travel agents do not get "free" trips. We invest our own money and especially our time to travel and visit the destinations we recommend. Sure we experience new travel options and learn about destinations. The most important reason why we make this professional investment is for the opportunity to meet face to face with the right important industry contacts. These important connections truly benefits the vacation experience our clients ultimately enjoy. We know exactly who to speak to in order to make special requests for our clients. This could mean things like connecting rooms, welcome gifts or advanced restaurant reservations. These relationships have proved priceless in emergency situations.
Travel Agents Have Specialized Expertise - At our agency, we specialize in Family and multi generational vacations. In a former lifetime, I was a pediatric nurse so I often use those skills to help my clients. I will often share and collaborate with other travel industry professionals to help clients enjoy vacations that exceed their expectations. Even within our agency, we have agents who are Disney experts while others have experience creating customized tours in Europe, Africa and Asia. If we don't have an in house person who can best serve our clients, we collaborate with other professionals who can.
Travel Agents Have Priceless Advice - First hand experience and knowledge are what will change a typical vacation into a real memorable experience. Even though good travel agents professionally invest in their own travel to gain this experience, not every Travel Agent can humanly know every destination in the world. That said, good travel agents have a "golden network" and know exactly who to call to get the answers their clients need.
Travel Agents Prevent Hassles - Most DIY travel people don't realize if there is a HUGE difference between great value and the cheapest price. For example, you may pay a really low price for your family's flight but that doesn't mean you'll make your connecting flight. This could result in an unexpected camp out at the airport terminal and the out of pocket loss for the vacation days you're missing. A good travel agent know certain airport require longer connection times than others to prevent problems. This is just one of many examples that "trips" up online travel shoppers and may explain so many of the unnecessary rants on travel review websites.
Travel Agents Babysit Your Reservations - Many folks have commitment issues when it comes to pulling the trigger and confirming their reservations. They always think they will get a cheaper last minute rate. Often they wait too long, forfeit availability and end up paying much more for their vacation. Most people don't realize that if their trip goes on sale, they can get a lower rate. A good travel agent will babysit your reservation and have any lower prices or sales applied to your reservation, even after you've made your initial deposit has been made. This is true for many cruises or Disney vacations. For Caribbean or Mexico resort vacations, our agents can direct you to price guarantee coverage that offers you the same option.
Travel Agents Offer Affordable Payment Plans - Online booking require payment in full at the time you confirm your reservations. This means you could be paying huge credit card interest fees that will add to the total cost of your vacation in the long run. If you plan ahead and use a travel agent, you will only be required to pay a small deposit to confirm your family's vacation reservations. Final payment for your trip will usually be required 45 to 60 days prior to your departure. This means your travel agent can set up a monthly vacation layaway program that could save you hundreds on credit card interest.
Travel Agents Work As Your Troubleshooter - No matter how much you prepare, sometimes unexpected "stuff" happens while your on vacation. When you book with a travel agent, they are with you every step of the way. We are your personal advocate. If you run into any issues, your travel agent can make calls and usually fix the situation so you don't have to waste valuable vacation time problem solving. We usually know who to call and how to ask for the right solutions many times exceeding your expectations. In the rare instance that you need to make a travel insurance claim or need to follow up on a complaint after you return home, your travel agent advocate continues to work on behalf on your family. We make sure any problems are solved to your satisfaction.
I don't think my job is weird at all...honestly, I think I'm one of the lucky ones.
I am one of those rare individuals who looks forward to getting up, pouring a cup of tea and going to work every the morning. I have a 26 step commute to my home office where I connect every day with friends and great people all over the globe. My staff and I work virtually. They are happy and get to be at home surrounded by the people they love every day. We get to help our clients explore the world, check items off their bucket lists, share life changing memories with their loved ones and come home a suitcases full of amazing experiences. I am fortunate now to be doing this long enough that the kids I once sent off on vacations with their parents are now calling me up to help plan their destination weddings or to take their own kids on vacation.
Tell me, does this all sound like a bad day at the office to you?

Pre Cruise Stay at Hotel - December 11, 2015

NCL Escape Cruise Adventure
December 12 – 18, 2015

Pre Cruise Stay at Hotel
Miccosukee Resort & Gaming, Miami, FL (About 30 minutes from Port of Miami)

Leaving Tampa at 10AM Friday was no picnic because it takes about 5 hours from Tampa to get to the Hotel. If you know anything about us, yes, we were up all night and very excited about going on our cruise. I slept most of the way but woke up in enough time to see the scenic route on US 41 South. Along the way, and getting closer to the hotel, there were many signs about boat rides along the Everglades. Pretty interesting and reasonable rates if you had the time to spare to do it.

When we got to the Hotel, as soon as you walked in, you could smell the aftermath of clean pinesol and of course, cigarette smoke. Trying to mask it was ok, but even for an ex-smoker like myself, it was not pleasant. I had never stayed at this hotel or even heard of it. We decided to stay at this hotel based on a recommendation from a reputable vendor. So much for that.

Since we had to park our own car, JC asked to get a cart for our luggage from the front desk. Their response: they only had 2 carts for the entire hotel and the one that was available was in a guest’s room. We asked them to call the guest to have them bring it downstairs and their statement was “Well we really don’t want to disturb them as they are people you really don’t want to mess with. We asked them if the cart was inside their room and they didn’t give us a straight answer so we are assuming that the cart is in their room.” What???? I don’t understand this. Do you?

So lugging our luggage to the front desk we checked in with no one asking if we needed assistance. As part of the pricing for the room we got free breakfast the next morning, free parking for the entire time we are on our cruise, free shuttle from the hotel to the pier and back, and a $30 voucher for gaming, if you are a new player to the casino. Not bad for the $119 price per night stay. That is pretty much the only positive part about the stay at this hotel, just the price.

The room was decent and the beds were comfortable and clean. We were able to go to one of the restaurants, Café Hammock, to eat something but the food did not taste well. Pretty bland and not much to choose from, especially the price they were charging for it. The casino itself was very small and really didn’t have the ambiance of what you would expect of a casino let alone a resort.

Moreover, it was about to get ugly. That night, we went to bed early so that we would be refreshed for the next day to go to the cruise. At about 1AM, there was music, and I mean LOUD music, coming from both the 2nd AND 8th floors. I called the front desk and they stated that there were people on their balcony on the 8th floor playing loud Spanish music in addition to a party on the 2nd floor at one of the banquet rooms. I asked if they could “tone it down” is it was extremely disturbing and could not sleep plus it was very late. They apologized and stated that they would take care of it. An hour later, it was still loud but now got even LOUDER! I go downstairs to reception, in my pj’s, and told them this was unacceptable. Still not sleeping, about 20 minutes later, everything was quiet again. Now still half asleep, not being able to go back into a deep sleep, I was awake for the next 3 hours. Not happy at this point.

The next morning, still not able to get a cart or assistance with our luggage to get to the shuttle, we check out and I express my discontent with the overall performance of the hotel. The only statement they could make was “I am sorry.”

Our overall perception and experience at this hotel: DON'T STAY HERE! I would have rather stayed in Miami at the Marriott or the Courtyard than this hotel. We both felt that it was way below the comparison of Empire Casino is in Yonkers. (If you have ever been to Empire Casino in Yonkers, NY, you know exactly what I mean). This Casino and clientele was the bottom of the barrel. The only good part is you saved some money.

The valuable lesson: You get what you pay for.

CruiseWorld 2015 - Day 3 - 11/13/15

CruiseWorld 2015
Day 3 - 11/13/15

Day 3 of CruiseWorld and I can't believe it is coming to an end for me.  The CruiseWorld event, however, doesn't end there.  Saturday and Sunday are cruise line ship inspections where travel agents are invited to tour cruise ships that are docked at the Fort Lauderdale cruise port so that they can educate and "test it" for their clients to see if it is a good fit.  However, I did not participate this year in the inspections, but will try next year as we had to get home on Saturday for prior engagements.

For me, the time we spent since the first day we got to Fort Lauderdale seemed to rush by to fast and I have learned so much from this event.  CruiseWorld, since I have done it before, can be overwhelming.  This time around though, it really felt like an overload of information, so much that you could spew it all over the floor!  My brain still hurts at this point in just writing this. LOL.

This last day at CruiseWorld, we started extremely early and it was off to the Convention Center at 7 am to join everyone for breakfast sponsored by Xcelerator, then onward to our educational modules and supplier seminars to learn some more.

At this point, as I am sure that most people felt the same way I did, that we were all tired.  Remember that this event crammed in not only educational classes, but supplier seminars, an Exhibitor Showcase, and networking with other travel agents, suppliers, wholesalers, etc.!  Very fast paced, energetic, and down right intense at times.  You don't even have enough time to talk with others as your schedule is pretty tight.  That is actually a good thing because your goal, at least for me as a travel guru, is to get as much information as I can, learn and educate myself, and benefit my clients.  This is what these travel agent events are all about.  So as a client, you really have to appreciate what we do to provide excellent service to you.

After the day ended and saying goodbye to colleagues and friends, it was back to the hotel to get ready for a last minute concert and blow off some steam!  J.C. surprised me with complimentary tickets from one of the band members of Kamelot.  One of my favorite melodic metal bands!  What a great way to end Cruiseworld!!

CruiseWorld 2015 - Day 2 - 11/12/15

CruiseWorld 2015
Day 2 - 11/12/15

Here we go....Day 2 of CruiseWorld and I am already pumped for another day of fun-filled seminars and events! (However, getting up at 6am was not fun.)

Dondra, JC, Me, & Vicki
Breakfast started at 7:15am and was sponsored by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.  This was a great presentation as two of my favorite people, Vicki Freed and Dondra Ritzenthaler are really passionate and show lots of enthusiasm about their cruise lines and what they do.  What do you know?  Sounds like me!

Keeping the time in mind and not getting much sleep the night before, we had more to go.  After breakfast there were more break out sessions and seminars on different supplier brands, educational classes, and then lunch.

After lunch it was time for the BIG show!  The CruiseWorld Ribbon Cutting and Exhibitor Showcase.

Exhibitor Showcase Walk
One thing I must say is that the Exhibitor Showcase at CruiseWorld is one of the best in the industry.  Even though it is only for travel agents and not for the general public, I have the opportunity to do many things that can only benefit YOU! This is why I do it with my customers in mind.

Dancing Away With Carnival Cruise Lines
The Exhibitor Showcase provides me with networking capabilities not available through the internet and "one-on-one" meetings with different brands and what they can offer to my customers as a benefit, education on each different brand which can either have a specific specialization that meets my customers needs and/or benefit my customers in other ways, or it might be a special group vacation I am working on that a supplier could add perks to, for instance, or enable me to plan each specification of my client's vacation to the very last detail with ease.  It's a win-win for both of us with endless possibilities!  In addition, there is a wealth of information that you can't get from the internet which makes me as your travel agent unique in every way that the competition can't match.

Here are some of the many suppliers I have close relations with that give my clients the "special attention" they deserve! (just to name a few....)

My Norwegian Cruise Line Team
My MSC Cruise Team

Special Needs Group
After the Exhibitor Showcase, it was time to retire for the evening, write this blog and go to bed to do it all over again tomorrow.  This is exciting and fun!

So keep in mind the next time you search the internet for hours... contact your travel agent guru!

Stay tuned for the next adventure post tomorrow!

Please feel free to comment as I would love to hear from you.  Stay tuned for tomorrow's last day of CruiseWorld post adventure.....
